A Tale of Guildford Gamers: 40k Part 2

Our intrepid crew has been busy and growing over the first quarter of 2020. Adding Chris Ranson’s Tyranids to the tale! Some people have hit their initial target of 500pts and others have shot straight past it with the lockdown and their hobby processes being hyper efficient.

But enough blabbering about the top level stuff, let’s get into why you’re all really here, the armies themselves!

Hive Fleet Malacostraca Chris Ranson

Hive Fleet Malacostraca were first drawn from the cold void of space during the Fall of the Eldar. Their collective psychic might had drawn the attention of the swarm who began their onslaught with a series of co-ordinated attacks on the outlying systems and any Craftworlds that were unfortunate to cross their path. Their demise and subsequent consumption was swift. But before Hive Fleet Malacostraca could secure their foothold in the eastern fringes of the galaxy, the hedonistic ways of the Eldar gave birth to the Chaos god, Slaanesh. With such vast quantities of biomass destroyed and the increasing number of interactions with the daemon forces of the warp, the collective Hive Mind silently sunk back into the darkness and began its long sleep, waiting and drifting towards the next unsuspecting victim. I always loved the Nids as a kid so it seemed liking a fitting place start when I jumped back into the hobby last year. I already had a small force when I was asked to join in with the Tale of Gamers and hopefully this will be the motivation I need to actually get an army finished! For my first 500 points I wanted to get a good force of basic troops which I can then build on whilst adding some of the other big beasties that we have available to us.

Group shot! There is a Wraithlord sized hole here as I haven’t got the magnets I want yet. I seem to be preparing to paint some Dire Avengers next, which isn’t really on brief and not worth many points! I’m looking forward to painting them though. I’m going to do them in a lighter blue than the rest of the armies’ dark blue but which will tie in better with the darker blue when I manage to do some highlighting. I will focus on the rest of the Wraithguard and my characters in the next few months which should help me stay on track points wise.

First dire avenger. I went a bit bright on the blue. Not an issue unless I try to have some swooping hawks too as this is more their colour…

Phareon Amenhotep III (Adam)

I got a metal night bringer which is already cleaned up. Just needs pinning. That and 10 immortals are tomorrow’s goal ready to undercoat. I’ve set myself a goal of painting three eliminators before starting them. Trying to clear the back log. Bit of green stuffing to do at waist. Also not convinced by joint between scythe head and shaft. Can’t pin it. Going to do three heavy destroyers as well. I think the extra range is really useful.

Dengue Ebolus (Josh)

So a little bit behind, corona virus has meant that my partner has taken over my painting desk so that she can work from home, so things have slowed and I haven’t quite finished the rhino paintjob. Really happy how the army is progressing, learning and discovering techniques and new ways to paint. Moving forward the plan is to have my lord of contagion be a counts as Typhus to buff my poxwalkers and therefore add another full unit of them. I’m also working on a conversion for a daemon prince of Nurgle (Prince Covid, Crown of the weeping lung). I’ll also be adding to the elites slots with a foul blightspawn and a noxious blightbringer to get those poxwalkers up the board quicker. Just gonna have to create a new space to model and paint!

Phaeron Osirekh David

Finished the start collecting box to provide the core of the army. Stuck with the planned orange/black/grey colour scheme and am being strict about adhering to the ‘3 colour minimum and based’ standard to keep the project simple and on track.

I also got started on the next poriton of the army and the bit I am most excited about. Adding the C’Tan! My scheme involves 5 C’Tan but I could potentially get more if I did not despise the Tesseract Vault model being so huge. I’ll be using some 3rd party models from Mierce Miniatures to be three free floating Transcendent C’Tan in the next points jump. I painted the Deceiver and the ‘Dawnbringer’ C’Tan. I couldn’t use a Nightbringer as Adam’s Phaeron has one!

A Tale of Guildford Gamers: 40k

To shake things ups the Guildford Games Club is running a blod series based on the old Tale of 4 Gamers model from White Dwarf many years ago. The idea is for people taking part to slowly build a new army and play some games with it and report on their progress.

Each quarter the participants will add 500pts to their army, getting it table ready and getting in a game with it, check back to this blog to see the latest progress of our adventuresome team!

So whose forces are gathering?

The Armies!

Dengue Ebolus (Josh)

, 2, 3. Dengue Ebolus had made planet fall not several days ago with a handful of plaguemarines and a rhino, they had already infected several villages close to their drop site. 4, 5, 6. They watched the villagers bloat and discolour with such fecundity and squalor that their laughter cut out their dying moans. Ah glorious 7. The lucky died within hours, the others rose again as mindless buboed walkers, staggering forward with agonal gasps and crawling flesh. 8, 9, 10. So few now but more would arrive, Ku’gath had said so. 11, 12, 13. Why had he been sent here, a feudal imperial world by his estimation. 14, 15. Ku ‘garth and Septicus had spoke of great secrets here, the beginnings of new contagion, but it appeared to be far less than he had hoped for. 16, 17. Dengue and his warbands continued onwards in search of this promised prize with an ever growing horde of gagling poxwalkers at their backs. 18, 19. The terrain opened out into a wasteland before them, as Dengue surveyed the horizon, his milky cataracted eyes came to rest on the jutting, monolith like silhouettes in the distance. 20. This must be what he was searching for.

Phareon Amenhotep III (Adam)

Phareon Amenhotep III gazed across the snow blasted icy wilderness. All life gone from his beautiful world. 60 million years after the biotransferance and the start of hibernation, the reanimation protocols had initiated, as programmed, and they were all supposed to rise into the paradise they left all those years ago. But no, the time hadn’t passed as they had calculated. A combination of Imperial interference on their tomb world and cosmic meddling by the force of their Chaos Gods, had locked the planet into a frozen hell. The world had been abused by the Mechanicus of Man in M35, driven into climate change, and eventually an Ice Age. This had removed the taint of man from the world. Time was their friend, and the following 5000 years had let the ice age play out; its fury starting to wax, and the atmosphere returning to how it had been. The architectural glories and artistry of his rein in life might be gone, but a blank canvas for his will would be his. Nothing built lasts 60 million years after all. Then the Cicatrix Maledictum had ripped the galaxy in two and, in ripping space time, had knocked their system further up in the galactic plane. This had stretched the system and pulled the planet further from the sun. Now their paradise would never return. With war raging through the galaxy, once again the Imperium of Man has returned to steal the planets riches. But now, newly awakening eyes watch them and plan their removal. Imotek ‘Lord of the Storm’ Supreme Overlord of the Sautekh dynasty, and Amenhotep III’s liege Lord, is on planet taking pledges of loyalty again and reinforcing Amenhoteps limited forces with weapons of war and destroyer cults, keen on exterminating the humans to sake their infinite hatred. The reanimation process is long and the population of the tomb world vast. For now Imotek’s forces are welcome, but time will tell whether that continues……….

This is the list I’m working toward. Will also have 24 warriors a command barge and annihilation barge from start collecting boxes I’m getting to top it off. I’m hoping for a boost to them in the next psychic awakening book.

I have wanted to collect an Iyanden Craftworld army since their first army lists during 3rd edition. Small elite armies hold a special kind of quality only those usually carting around horde armies will know – my 40k armies to date have been Imperial Guard and Orks. I will be painting my Iyanden in their normal yellow with blue highlights; the yellow being the new Iyanden Yellow contrast over Wraithbone primer. This went really quite well on my test guardian but we will see how well my technique holds up when painting larger kits with flatter areas. To start with I’ll be adding two squads of five Wraithguard and a Farseer and then shortly adding on a Wraithlord. I’m sure I will later add some non-wraith units but I’ll be trying to stick close to the idea of an army on its last legs, whose generals have had to make the desperate choice to awake their ancestors from their slumber so they can march to war alongside them.

Phaeron Osirekh, Fleshcraver (David)

Osirekh craves a return to living flesh for themself and their subjects. The deception of the C’Tan is too much for their pride to bear and the loss of the sensations and creativity of the living a punishment gone on too long. The Triarch Szarekh has recently found Osirekh’s Tomb World and triggered the dormant reanimation protocols, awakening their ancient machinery and finding a new ally, one fuelled by spite, envy for the living and a boundless superiority complex. One day they will cultivate the living creatures of the galaxy like a garden, to choose the finest specimens to transfer Necrontyr minds into. Until then Osirekh has a galaxy of living creatures to defend and a hateful vengeance to take upon the C’Tan who tricked them so.

Don’t really have a plan for how the army is going to evolve but I like the idea rounding up C’Tan shards and enslaving them to the Phaeron’s will, some small measure of revenge for their deception 60 million years ago.

To start I am just going to buy a Start Collecting box, giving me 10 warriors, 3 scarabs, 5 immortals, an overlord, a lord and an Annihilation Barge which should cover me for the first 500pts or so.

As for painting I’m going for a grey, black and orange scheme but will be aiming for a more speed paint approach by leaving out additional steps like highlights, mostly it’ll be primer and block colours.

Guildford Games Club Hobby Challenge: December!

The final Hobby Challenge entry for 2019! Let’s have a look at what the intrepid challengees got up to in December…

Paul got the gnoll bug and painted some for Frostgrave, then realised he needed to paint some Giants. As is a common realisation amongst most people. All of this got derailed however by wielding the world bending powers of a God to forge a field of battle

Adam continued the trend of forging worlds from nothing by making a Frostgrave table

I painted some Stormcast Eternals to finish my army off, finsished my test White Scars for Epic and the Green Arrow as I desperately tried to complete one of my pledges (note: I failed)

The Pledges!

NamePledgeProgressComments
Tom James Lavers Bevell 1. Finish painting my Dark angels (there currently are at least 200 unpainted models, 80 of which are tactical marines)
2. Actually win a game with them!
Sam ParishI have four cases of unfinished models. Some need some hobby work done, others just need painting. What I’d like to do, is have the club pick one of my boxes at random on a poll on the Games club page, and that’s the first box I work on.
James DixTo complete my:
Imperial Guard army (4000pts ish left to do)
Prussian army
Necromunda House Gangs
Alex EdeFully complete my heresy blood angels and sanguinius (if when he drops) roughly 1500pts left to go and place well with them in the heresy events And make a proper start and finish my ironjawz to 2500pts and then take them to an event at WHw
Paul TownsendI aim to complete the equivalent of two elements (character, “troop” sized unit or war machine) for kings of war each month. Included in this at least 3 giants, complete my Frostgrave warband, napoleonic french, and get the Halfmen to a good playable size army. Game on!I can report for December as being actually completed are eight Gnolls. By way of a roundup, I include a picture of my giants Shame – nowhere near hit that target…But, while not quite the direction of the pledge- one of my napoleonic projects had progressed far more than expected
David Last1. Fully paint and base 200 models 2. Finish the small projects: Blood Bowl Team, Superhero Team
3. Attend 3 tournaments4. (Attempt to) run a Campaign at the club
14 Stormcast Eternals, 8 Epic White Scars stands, 1 Green Arrow

Ross PackmanI’d like to get a Necromunda board finished, including multi-level terrain.
Mark CollinsI hope to rewrite and finish a third novel, World Without Bounds, for Easter and then write a fourth entirely new novel from scratch in the same series by Christmas.
James Jimmy Pownall I want to be able to field 3k pts of skaven in 6th Ed fantasy fully painted.
Wes SaundersI want to work on my painting techniques and at least enter some kind of painting competition
Adam StallwoodI’d like to pledge a genestealer cult army for 40k. 2000pts (ish) worthFrostgrave table complete
Eddie TurnerTake on GWs Lord of the Rings Hobby Bingo

And that’s us done for 2019!

Guildford Games Club Hobby Challenge: November!

Delayed getting this written up so apologies! But let’s see what the industrious hobbyists at the GGC have been up to…

Adam has some new converted Scouts using the Necromunda Enforcer models as a base plus look at that detailing on the bike consoles!

Paul is still building his monster menagerie like some kind of mad zoo keeper…now to wait for his players to actually roll them up on the random encounter tables.

I had a disjointed month, moved house, etc. so only painted 3 models proper. I did do some work to make an MDF army playable though.

Guildford Games Club Hobby Challenge: October!

Let’s see what the GGC has been up to this month!

Adam has been diverse in his projects. Painting space marines, placing in a Warhammer Fantasy 6th Edition tournament and getting his terrain on!

Paul had a similarly eclectic month, painting varied Reaper figures for Frostgrave. And a train.

I painted some random bits andpieces, trying to finish off my paint queue for the year. I also went to the Epic World Tournament in France and finished in 3rd! Hurray!

Guildford Games Club Hobby Challenge: September!

Another month another set of industrious painters at the GGC!

Adam finishes up some more models for his Genestealer Cult and adds to his new Space Marine project. Fantastic work with the OSL as always.

Paul has taken on a challenge for a big for Kings of War. That doesn’t stop him painting up some objectives for Frostgrave!

James Dix’s Imperial Guard force grows apace with a huge amount of work being put into it. Those cavalry are especially good but I really want to know how he does that dirty white on the tanks…

And I finished some dwarves for Lord of the Rings, a single Custodian Guard and Tom Bombadil with a custom base to mark his zone of control.

Guildford Games Club Hobby Challenge: August!

With his Genestealer Cult tournament ready Adam could have taken his foot off the pedal. But nothing will hold him back from defending the Imperium of man! Some eminently rational space marines: Raptors!

Not to be outdone Paul’s legions of halflings gather apace, backed up by some giant armoured halflings from Italy and never before have I seen such appealing twigs. Just look at those goats!

I finished off the last bits of my LotR Elves with Gil-Galad, Haldir and Elrond, plus Gandalf ‘cos everyone needs a Gandalf. Then dove into my WW2 French for Flames of War. Plus some little airplanes for Epic.

End result : – set of Gabion defences suitable for 28mm Two regiments of Roman Praetorians. Two regiments of half-bill-men (spearlings ). And a troop of goat cavalry to top it off.

Adam StallwoodI’d like to pledge a genestealer cult army for 40k. 2000pts (ish) worthAfter the completion of my tournament list for GSC I have been swept up with new marine hype and have decided to paint more to my Primaris force. These guys are Raptors. A successor of the ravenguard and commonly known as sensible marine. These guys style of play have seen a massive boost with the new vanguard units and need a little love. I have just been painting the stuff I already have, left overs from dark imperium and shadowspear. Here are some pictures of the entire force to date, some where painted over a year ago though.

Guildford Games Club Hobby Challenge: July!

July is checking in with some fantastic work from the Guildford Games Club. Adam is here to dazzle us with object source lighting and some cheeky conversions from Kal Jherico and a Kasrkin to make more mutant pistolero

Paul’s halfling horde grows ever mightier with some trolls, ogre bodyguards, a financier and a goat mounted knightly prince. Not to be outdone by those hobbitses the Rohirrim rally to their banners

I painted some more elves for Lord of the Rings. Wood elves and some of the many (many many) elven heroes. Plus I added some bright orange and red remotes to my Infinity forces, who needs stealth when you’re the Invicincible Army

Game on!For frostgrave: “paleface” and a speedy familiar / imp
For LotR: Rohan banner bearers
For warhammer (6th): some cute stone trolls from TT combat
And for Kings of war, a regiment of house guard represented by a not-so-noble prince, his ogre-borne financier and a few elite guards.

Guildford Games Club Hobby Challenge: June!

June has been a quiet month on the hobby front but even that doesn’t mean there’s been no progress. Paul shows us just who the master of halflings is (as though that was a topic ever in doubt) but also dazzles us with some romans and an ogre.

I was rather less productive this month but I did manage to paint a pair of Infinity figures and some cavalry for Lord of the Rings

A new challenger approaches! Adam has more Genestealer Cultists with which to bring enlightenment to all of us citizens.

Adam StallwoodI’d like to pledge a genestealer cult army for 40k. 2000pts (ish) worthWith another tournament coming up mid july at Element games in Stockport, and a apparently it’s a real shark tank environment, I’ve been giving my GSC a hard edge. Lots of expendable brood brother and more abberants! Going for a take on the ‘muscle beach’ style list. We’ll see how it goes! It’s chess clocks and a horde army so going to need to speed up. I’ve still got to complete another kelermorph, 5 more abberants, 10 brood brothers and 20 acolytes for the 17th july. It’s going to be tight!

Guildford Games Club Hobby Challenge: May!

May is done and there’s been some very industrious work done this month. Let’s have a look!

Adam has built a display board to go with his Genestealer Cult, showing us where they are truly from. It looks fantastic!

Paul comes back swinging with two entire units and three characters. One and all little masterpieces. Just look at that half a Gandalf!

I had a productive month, getting models done for several games. Sigmarines and Space Marines, French Recon troops and a mix of criminals and law enforcement.

Converted regiment of “Honour guard” (halflings on GW Gryphon hounds), a halfling wizard from Hasslefree, an Ogre for frostgrave and finishing touches completed on Friar Tuck from Warlord Games! I also had my first true game with a fully painted pure halfling army so that target was met this month too!
