A Tale of Guildford Gamers: 40k Part 2

Our intrepid crew has been busy and growing over the first quarter of 2020. Adding Chris Ranson’s Tyranids to the tale! Some people have hit their initial target of 500pts and others have shot straight past it with the lockdown and their hobby processes being hyper efficient.

But enough blabbering about the top level stuff, let’s get into why you’re all really here, the armies themselves!

Hive Fleet Malacostraca Chris Ranson

Hive Fleet Malacostraca were first drawn from the cold void of space during the Fall of the Eldar. Their collective psychic might had drawn the attention of the swarm who began their onslaught with a series of co-ordinated attacks on the outlying systems and any Craftworlds that were unfortunate to cross their path. Their demise and subsequent consumption was swift. But before Hive Fleet Malacostraca could secure their foothold in the eastern fringes of the galaxy, the hedonistic ways of the Eldar gave birth to the Chaos god, Slaanesh. With such vast quantities of biomass destroyed and the increasing number of interactions with the daemon forces of the warp, the collective Hive Mind silently sunk back into the darkness and began its long sleep, waiting and drifting towards the next unsuspecting victim. I always loved the Nids as a kid so it seemed liking a fitting place start when I jumped back into the hobby last year. I already had a small force when I was asked to join in with the Tale of Gamers and hopefully this will be the motivation I need to actually get an army finished! For my first 500 points I wanted to get a good force of basic troops which I can then build on whilst adding some of the other big beasties that we have available to us.

Group shot! There is a Wraithlord sized hole here as I haven’t got the magnets I want yet. I seem to be preparing to paint some Dire Avengers next, which isn’t really on brief and not worth many points! I’m looking forward to painting them though. I’m going to do them in a lighter blue than the rest of the armies’ dark blue but which will tie in better with the darker blue when I manage to do some highlighting. I will focus on the rest of the Wraithguard and my characters in the next few months which should help me stay on track points wise.

First dire avenger. I went a bit bright on the blue. Not an issue unless I try to have some swooping hawks too as this is more their colour…

Phareon Amenhotep III (Adam)

I got a metal night bringer which is already cleaned up. Just needs pinning. That and 10 immortals are tomorrow’s goal ready to undercoat. I’ve set myself a goal of painting three eliminators before starting them. Trying to clear the back log. Bit of green stuffing to do at waist. Also not convinced by joint between scythe head and shaft. Can’t pin it. Going to do three heavy destroyers as well. I think the extra range is really useful.

Dengue Ebolus (Josh)

So a little bit behind, corona virus has meant that my partner has taken over my painting desk so that she can work from home, so things have slowed and I haven’t quite finished the rhino paintjob. Really happy how the army is progressing, learning and discovering techniques and new ways to paint. Moving forward the plan is to have my lord of contagion be a counts as Typhus to buff my poxwalkers and therefore add another full unit of them. I’m also working on a conversion for a daemon prince of Nurgle (Prince Covid, Crown of the weeping lung). I’ll also be adding to the elites slots with a foul blightspawn and a noxious blightbringer to get those poxwalkers up the board quicker. Just gonna have to create a new space to model and paint!

Phaeron Osirekh David

Finished the start collecting box to provide the core of the army. Stuck with the planned orange/black/grey colour scheme and am being strict about adhering to the ‘3 colour minimum and based’ standard to keep the project simple and on track.

I also got started on the next poriton of the army and the bit I am most excited about. Adding the C’Tan! My scheme involves 5 C’Tan but I could potentially get more if I did not despise the Tesseract Vault model being so huge. I’ll be using some 3rd party models from Mierce Miniatures to be three free floating Transcendent C’Tan in the next points jump. I painted the Deceiver and the ‘Dawnbringer’ C’Tan. I couldn’t use a Nightbringer as Adam’s Phaeron has one!

A Tale of Guildford Gamers: 40k

To shake things ups the Guildford Games Club is running a blod series based on the old Tale of 4 Gamers model from White Dwarf many years ago. The idea is for people taking part to slowly build a new army and play some games with it and report on their progress.

Each quarter the participants will add 500pts to their army, getting it table ready and getting in a game with it, check back to this blog to see the latest progress of our adventuresome team!

So whose forces are gathering?

The Armies!

Dengue Ebolus (Josh)

, 2, 3. Dengue Ebolus had made planet fall not several days ago with a handful of plaguemarines and a rhino, they had already infected several villages close to their drop site. 4, 5, 6. They watched the villagers bloat and discolour with such fecundity and squalor that their laughter cut out their dying moans. Ah glorious 7. The lucky died within hours, the others rose again as mindless buboed walkers, staggering forward with agonal gasps and crawling flesh. 8, 9, 10. So few now but more would arrive, Ku’gath had said so. 11, 12, 13. Why had he been sent here, a feudal imperial world by his estimation. 14, 15. Ku ‘garth and Septicus had spoke of great secrets here, the beginnings of new contagion, but it appeared to be far less than he had hoped for. 16, 17. Dengue and his warbands continued onwards in search of this promised prize with an ever growing horde of gagling poxwalkers at their backs. 18, 19. The terrain opened out into a wasteland before them, as Dengue surveyed the horizon, his milky cataracted eyes came to rest on the jutting, monolith like silhouettes in the distance. 20. This must be what he was searching for.

Phareon Amenhotep III (Adam)

Phareon Amenhotep III gazed across the snow blasted icy wilderness. All life gone from his beautiful world. 60 million years after the biotransferance and the start of hibernation, the reanimation protocols had initiated, as programmed, and they were all supposed to rise into the paradise they left all those years ago. But no, the time hadn’t passed as they had calculated. A combination of Imperial interference on their tomb world and cosmic meddling by the force of their Chaos Gods, had locked the planet into a frozen hell. The world had been abused by the Mechanicus of Man in M35, driven into climate change, and eventually an Ice Age. This had removed the taint of man from the world. Time was their friend, and the following 5000 years had let the ice age play out; its fury starting to wax, and the atmosphere returning to how it had been. The architectural glories and artistry of his rein in life might be gone, but a blank canvas for his will would be his. Nothing built lasts 60 million years after all. Then the Cicatrix Maledictum had ripped the galaxy in two and, in ripping space time, had knocked their system further up in the galactic plane. This had stretched the system and pulled the planet further from the sun. Now their paradise would never return. With war raging through the galaxy, once again the Imperium of Man has returned to steal the planets riches. But now, newly awakening eyes watch them and plan their removal. Imotek ‘Lord of the Storm’ Supreme Overlord of the Sautekh dynasty, and Amenhotep III’s liege Lord, is on planet taking pledges of loyalty again and reinforcing Amenhoteps limited forces with weapons of war and destroyer cults, keen on exterminating the humans to sake their infinite hatred. The reanimation process is long and the population of the tomb world vast. For now Imotek’s forces are welcome, but time will tell whether that continues……….

This is the list I’m working toward. Will also have 24 warriors a command barge and annihilation barge from start collecting boxes I’m getting to top it off. I’m hoping for a boost to them in the next psychic awakening book.

I have wanted to collect an Iyanden Craftworld army since their first army lists during 3rd edition. Small elite armies hold a special kind of quality only those usually carting around horde armies will know – my 40k armies to date have been Imperial Guard and Orks. I will be painting my Iyanden in their normal yellow with blue highlights; the yellow being the new Iyanden Yellow contrast over Wraithbone primer. This went really quite well on my test guardian but we will see how well my technique holds up when painting larger kits with flatter areas. To start with I’ll be adding two squads of five Wraithguard and a Farseer and then shortly adding on a Wraithlord. I’m sure I will later add some non-wraith units but I’ll be trying to stick close to the idea of an army on its last legs, whose generals have had to make the desperate choice to awake their ancestors from their slumber so they can march to war alongside them.

Phaeron Osirekh, Fleshcraver (David)

Osirekh craves a return to living flesh for themself and their subjects. The deception of the C’Tan is too much for their pride to bear and the loss of the sensations and creativity of the living a punishment gone on too long. The Triarch Szarekh has recently found Osirekh’s Tomb World and triggered the dormant reanimation protocols, awakening their ancient machinery and finding a new ally, one fuelled by spite, envy for the living and a boundless superiority complex. One day they will cultivate the living creatures of the galaxy like a garden, to choose the finest specimens to transfer Necrontyr minds into. Until then Osirekh has a galaxy of living creatures to defend and a hateful vengeance to take upon the C’Tan who tricked them so.

Don’t really have a plan for how the army is going to evolve but I like the idea rounding up C’Tan shards and enslaving them to the Phaeron’s will, some small measure of revenge for their deception 60 million years ago.

To start I am just going to buy a Start Collecting box, giving me 10 warriors, 3 scarabs, 5 immortals, an overlord, a lord and an Annihilation Barge which should cover me for the first 500pts or so.

As for painting I’m going for a grey, black and orange scheme but will be aiming for a more speed paint approach by leaving out additional steps like highlights, mostly it’ll be primer and block colours.
